What is the LitCoLab?

Our LitCoLab is a bit different than a traditional tutoring center. Our goal is to help readers be the best they can be–how we get there may be different.

We have skilled K-12 reading specialists, special educators and talented teachers who will assess to determine your reader’s strengths and weaknesses and help answer any of your questions. Upon understanding your child’s individualized needs, we use research and evidenced based interventions to grow your reader into an engaged, passionate and wholly literate person. You will not find homework help or general subject tutoring, but what you will find are caring educators committed to creating independent learners who will have greater success in school and increased opportunities in life!

We also collaborate with other subject matter experts to provide math, foreign language, cultural, and financial literacies workshops on a regular bases. Please check out calendar of events.

“Reading is important, because if you can read, you can learn anything about everything and everything about anything.”

~Tommie dePaola

Winter classes are forming: Don’t hesitate to reach out for an assessment today.

Park Books & LitCoLab offers Certified Reading Specialist/Special Educators to work with small groups for specialized and individualized instruction.  Our focus is on growing readers at all levels and fostering a love of reading.

We offer a range of services to help you achieve the results you are after.  Whether your child is struggling in school, is excelling and would benefit from supplementation, is disengaged in reading, has poor decoding skills, or poor comprehension, we offer a large variety of programs to meet your reader’s needs.

Our reading and writing recovery programs are designed to support learners who have been impacted by the loss of in-person learning or would benefit from enrichment.

Reading Assessments

Certified Reading Specialists will evaluate your child and provide an informal report or complete comprehensive diagnostic report. Some of the assessments available are Fountas and Pinnell (F & P), QRI, WADE (Orton-Gillingham), GDRT-2, DIBELS and many more! Assessment are chosen based upon student need. Please note: we are aware of typical assessments used within area school systems and work in conjunction with other educators to ensure the most accurate and valid assessment results.

Reading Instruction

Reading Specialists and Certified Teachers provide guided reading to small groups (max 5). Groups are leveled by instructional reading level and many students will move at least one instructional reading level within 6 weeks! Small group instruction is specialized to the needs of children enrolled. A focus on decoding (blending sounds into words) and encoding (sounds into words, i.e. spelling) will take place in each meeting.

Writing Instruction

Specialists instruct students in the writing process to include persuasive, expository, descriptive and narrative writing. Workshops will be offered on college admissions essay writing, grade level grammar, spelling and writing conventions. Writing workshops are offered for 4th grade and up.

“I have a passion for teaching kids to become readers, to become comfortable with a book, not daunted. Books shouldn’t be daunting, they should be funny, exciting and wonderful; and learning to be a reader gives a terrific advantage.”

~Roald Dahl

Why You’ll Love Us

There has never been a better time to create and foster a lifestyle rooted in literacy. Literacy skills enrich our everyday life and provide us each with the opportunity to engage with one another in our community. In the 21st century, literacy is not just having the ability to read and write. To be globally literate includes:

  • Digital Literacy-ability to use, evaluate, create and critically think about information found online
  • Cultural Literacy-a willingness to understand and critique inequities and understanding that our own worldviews may be different than others
  • Media Literacy-the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, and create media. Media literate youth and adults are better able to understand the complex messages we receive from television, radio, Internet, newspapers, magazines, books, billboards, video games, music, and all other forms of media
  • Financial Literacy-the ability to understand how money works in the world

As our LitCo Lab continues to grow, so will our classes and workshops! We will offer sessions for all ages on varying types of literacy led by experts in the field.
